Raúl de Nieves has unveiled a breathtaking new installation at Pioneer Works, titled “In Light of Innocence,” that combines Catholic imagery, Mexican folklore, and tarot symbolism in a stunning display. The Main Hall of Pioneer Works has been transformed into a vibrant sanctuary, with 50 panels that resemble stained glass reaching towards the sky. These panels, made from colorful acetate, are fitted into the windows of the hall, creating a mesmerizing effect as light filters through.

Known for his use of unconventional materials, de Nieves once again showcases his artistic talent by incorporating wood, glue, tape, and brightly colored acetate in this project. The installation features non-religious imagery, including a skeleton riding a horse—a powerful symbol of transformation in tarot. The space is also adorned with typographic panels bearing phrases like “happiness runs in circular motion” and “words are like weapons they wound sometimes,” adding a thought-provoking element to the artwork.

The blend of spiritual references in “In Light of Innocence” creates a welcoming atmosphere that encourages reflection and connection across various belief systems. According to a statement about the installation, it invites viewers to embrace change as a form of renewal, leading to deeper insight and inner strength.

This exhibition marks de Nieves’ first institutional show in New York City and will be on display at Pioneer Works until December 14. To see more of the artist’s work, visit his Instagram page.
