A suspect wanted for homicide was shot and killed by police after a high-speed chase in southern California that ended in a shootout outside an In-N-Out Burger, authorities have reported.
The man, who has not been identified yet, allegedly carjacked a woman he had just fatally shot at a Carlsbad apartment complex before 10 p.m. on Friday, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.
Following the shooting, law enforcement agencies shared the victim’s license plate with neighboring departments. At 12:18 a.m., police in Laguna Beach spotted the stolen vehicle entering the city, as reported by police.
When Newport Beach officers attempted to stop the car about 30 minutes later, the suspect refused to pull over, leading to a pursuit involving multiple law enforcement agencies.
The suspect drove into a business complex in Laguna Hills where the In-N-Out Burger is located, exited the vehicle, and began firing at approaching police vehicles with a black semiautomatic handgun, authorities stated.
Terrifying video footage obtained by KTLA showed patrons at the In-N-Out Burger running for cover and hiding under tables when the gunfire broke out.
The suspect was shot during the chaotic incident, treated at the scene, and later pronounced dead at a local hospital, according to the police.
No officers were injured in the shootout.

Authorities are asking anyone with photos or videos of the incident to come forward as the investigation progresses.
