American Express has announced updates to its Platinum credit card, catering to the needs of high spenders in the U.S. The company revealed that both consumer and business versions of the Platinum card will now come with an increased annual fee of $895, a 29% hike from the previous fee of $695.

Despite the higher fee, cardholders can now enjoy $3,500 in annual benefits, mostly in the form of credits that offset purchases made on the card. This is more than double the previous benefit level. The updated perks include credits at popular establishments such as Uber, Lululemon, Oura, Resy, and enhanced hotel and streaming benefits. Business card users will also receive $3,500 in annual benefits, including hotel credits and offsets for purchases at Dell Technologies and Adobe.

Howard Grosfield, the president for U.S. consumer services at American Express, emphasized that these new benefits are in addition to the existing perks already offered by the card, ensuring that cardholders receive maximum value for their spending.

The move by American Express reflects a growing trend in the industry to attract wealthy consumers in the U.S. who drive a significant portion of the country’s overall spending. Competitors like JPMorgan Chase and Citigroup have also released updated premium cards with enticing benefits for high-spending individuals.

While the increased annual fee may deter some users from maintaining their Platinum card membership, American Express has introduced a new app feature to simplify the process of setting up and utilizing the benefits. This aims to address concerns raised by some users about the complexity of maximizing benefits, often referred to as the “coupon book” approach.

Existing customers with the consumer Platinum card will start incurring the new annual fee upon their renewal dates from January 2 onwards. American Express is confident that the enhanced benefits and streamlined user experience will continue to attract and retain high-value customers.

In a competitive landscape where premium card offerings are on the rise, American Express is positioning itself as a top choice for affluent consumers seeking exclusive perks and rewards. The company’s investment in refreshing the Platinum card underscores its commitment to meeting the evolving needs of high-spending individuals in the U.S.
