A disturbing incident occurred in the Bronx as a 19-year-old woman was raped by a sick individual while she sat on a bench early Wednesday morning. This horrifying attack took place at Park Avenue and East 183rd Street in Belmont, with the assailant approaching the victim, grabbing her, and committing the heinous act. The perpetrator, captured in NYPD footage wearing all black with his hood up, quickly fled the scene after the assault.
Despite the traumatic experience, the victim declined medical assistance at the location. This incident came just a day after another predator, identified as Nicholas Dejesus, assaulted a 33-year-old woman in Kingsbridge. Dejesus allegedly grabbed the woman’s neck from behind and threatened her, ultimately assaulting her in a similar manner.
The second attack in as many days has raised concerns about the safety of residents in the Bronx. It is alarming to note that reported cases of rape in the Bronx have increased by 27.5% this year, with 380 incidents reported compared to 298 during the same period last year. Citywide statistics also reflect a concerning trend, with a 21% increase in reported rapes across all five boroughs.
In a bid to address these alarming trends and ensure the safety of residents, law enforcement agencies are actively investigating these cases and working to apprehend the perpetrators. Dejesus, who was on parole for robbery, has been arrested and charged with rape, sexual abuse, assault, and harassment in connection with the Kingsbridge assault. The NYPD is urging anyone with information about these incidents to come forward and assist in the ongoing investigations.
The community is reminded to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure personal safety, especially during late hours. Authorities are also encouraging individuals to report any suspicious activity and seek help if they feel threatened or unsafe. By working together and staying informed, we can help prevent such heinous crimes and create a safer environment for all residents.
