This National Historically Black Colleges and Universities Week, we take a moment to reflect on the profound impact and rich heritage of America’s historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). Since the establishment of the first HBCU in 1837, these institutions have been pivotal in shaping generations of leaders, innovators, and public servants, providing a bedrock of academic excellence and cultural heritage that resonates across communities nationwide.

During my initial term in office, I made significant strides by enacting the FUTURE Act, which guarantees $255 million in ongoing annual funding for HBCUs. Additionally, I escalated funding for Federal Pell Grants and allocated more than $100 million towards scholarships and research initiatives at land-grant HBCUs. I also championed the HBCU PARTNERS Act, designed to enhance affordability and increase access for students aspiring to attend these vital institutions.

As the 47th President of the United States, I am committed to building upon these foundational successes. In April, I issued an Executive Order aimed at fostering excellence and innovation at HBCUs by launching a White House Initiative on HBCUs and establishing the President’s Board of Advisors on HBCUs under the Department of Education. These efforts are not merely bureaucratic formalities; they represent real initiatives to deliver quality education to HBCU students, strengthen partnerships across sectors, and enhance workforce readiness in burgeoning industries.

This week, we pay tribute to the legacy of HBCUs and the dedicated educators and families who have nurtured these institutions over the decades. Their history of perseverance, discipline, and triumph is vital to fortifying the American workforce and enriching our collective way of life. Our commitment remains steadfast: we will tirelessly advocate for opportunities for every American student, fortifying our nation by cultivating leaders endowed with character, integrity, and merit.
