Borusan Contemporary proudly presents Edward Burtynsky: Shifting Topography, marking the renowned Canadian artist’s first significant solo exhibition in Türkiye, expertly curated by Marcus Schubert. This exhibition unifies new works alongside a rich selection from Burtynsky’s extensive portfolio over the past 30 years.

Burtynsky, celebrated for his striking photographs that explore the intricate dynamics between nature and human industry, has scrutinized the transformation of our planet for over four decades. His images transcend mere documentation, embodying a profound meditation on humanity’s relationship with the environment.

This exhibition, commissioned by the Borusan Contemporary Art Collection, is structured thematically across different levels. The section titled “Erosion” unveils numerous new images captured during Burtynsky’s journey through central Anatolia and the Mediterranean. The “Water and Salt” segment chronicles these elemental forces and their impact on our environmental and cultural landscapes. “African Studies” delves into the significant transformations occurring in various Sub-Saharan nations due to human influences, while “Nature” revisits Burtynsky’s early landscape work from the 1980s, now informed by decades of experience. The “Quarries” section highlights pivotal works from Burtynsky’s mid-career that address these forms of environmental disruption. “Berezniki Mine” contemplates the dual role of mines as industrial sites and metaphors for change, whereas “Oil” reflects on this essential fuel’s significance, which propelled industrial advancements yet poses one of the gravest challenges of our time: climate change.
