The LA Lakers suffered a disappointing 128-106 loss to the Detroit Pistons, with both Luka Doncic and LeBron James struggling on Tuesday night. Doncic managed to put up 30 points, 11 assists, and five rebounds but also committed a costly eight turnovers. On the other hand, James contributed 17 points on 6-for-17 shooting along with four assists and five turnovers.

When questioned about how he could help manage James’ role as both a scoring threat and playmaker to reduce turnovers, Doncic simply stated, “Too many turnovers. We gotta stop losing the ball.”

The Lakers’ offensive strategy heavily relies on their three ball-dominant guards. With James initially sidelined at the start of the season, Doncic took on the primary scoring and playmaking responsibilities. However, upon James’ return, the dynamic of the team shifted, leading to confusion and a lack of “role clarity” as pointed out by Lakers coach JJ Redick.

The team’s struggles were further exacerbated by their tendency to commit turnovers, averaging 15.5 per game, ranking them at No. 22 in the NBA. In their game against the Pistons, they turned the ball over 21 times, resulting in 30 points for their opponents.

During the crucial fourth quarter, both Doncic and James made costly errors that ultimately contributed to the Lakers’ downfall. A series of missed shots and turnovers allowed the Pistons to extend their lead, with the Lakers unable to mount a comeback. By the time Doncic was subbed out with just over four minutes remaining, the Pistons had built a commanding 122-96 lead.

Overall, the Lakers’ offensive struggles, combined with their turnover issues, proved to be their downfall against the Pistons. Moving forward, they will need to address these issues and find a better balance between their star guards to avoid similar outcomes in future games.
