During two particularly challenging periods in my adult life, my journaling practice has been crucial for emotional healing. It served as an essential instrument for gaining perspective and fostering a mindset of gratitude.

In 2013, I began experiencing worrying physical symptoms. It quickly became clear that I was losing muscle control. The medical professionals were eager to assign a label, but I sought perspectives that deviated from the norm. This led me to study insightful individuals and launch the Wisdom Research Project.

Through my research, I identified eight key attributes that embody wisdom: Resilience, kindness, positivity, spirituality, humility, tolerance, creativity, and curiosity.

As my health continued to decline, journaling emerged as a means to cope with my frustration. It provided a space to articulate my thoughts and emotions, acting as an impartial listener. Through journaling, I gained a more balanced outlook which helped me cultivate gratitude and accept my disability.

Recently, after losing my home, community, and sense of belonging in the Palisades fire, journaling aided me in assessing what aspects of my life and identity still mattered. The qualities I had discovered in my Wisdom Research Project offered valuable perspective and guidance for moving forward.

The wise individuals I interviewed had faced significant challenges yet remained unbitter and unresentful. They exuded peace. I reflect in my journal on how I can learn from their experiences and integrate their traits of resilience, positivity, and curiosity into my own life.

For instance, even amid adversity, they embraced the belief that events don’t happen to them but happen for them. They perceive their challenges as opportunities for personal discovery through an empathetic lens.

If you’re interested in starting your own journaling journey, here are some benefits you can anticipate:

1. Allocates time for self-reflection

Journaling offers a chance to dedicate time to yourself. This practice is soothing and encourages you to appreciate these peaceful moments.

2. Helps clarify your thoughts

Writing provides an introspection space, allowing you to delve into concerns that weigh on your mind and discover your genuine perspectives.

3. Promotes personal growth

Analyzing situations and choices empowers you to embrace positivity and step away from negative thought patterns.

4. Reveals a thoughtful path ahead

As you navigate various issues through writing, you can formulate more deliberate and well-considered actions moving forward.

5. Encourages mindfulness

Journaling helps quiet your racing thoughts, allowing you to thoroughly explore your ideas and feel more grounded.

6. Fosters acceptance

Writing about challenging situations helps frame them within the broader context of your life, making it easier to come to terms with your experiences.

I also recommend starting with my Common Wisdom Journal, which includes prompts that encourage you to weave the eight elements discovered in my Wisdom Research Project into your daily reflections. The questions provided can help you gain deeper awareness and meaning in your life.
