Isabel Allende’s The House of the Spirits Set for Prime Video Adaptation

Bestselling author Isabel Allende has officially announced that the highly anticipated series adaptation of her seminal debut novel, The House of the Spirits, will premiere on Prime Video in the coming year.

During a press conference held in Santiago, Chile, Allende shared an exclusive clip from the 8-episode Spanish-language series, which is inspired by her captivating family saga.

The House of the Spirits chronicles the turbulent history of the Trueba family across generations, exploring themes of love, conflict, and the societal upheaval prevalent during each era. This multi-generational narrative weaves together elements of magical realism, hidden romances, and the deep-rooted effects of a revolutionary backdrop. As time unfolds, the characters’ concealed struggles and secrets create a distance between the proud patriarch and his determined granddaughter, reflecting a rift borne from conflicting ideologies.

New images from the series showcase a remarkable cast led by Aline Kuppenheim, known for her role in Chile ’76, portraying Nivea del Valle, alongside Fernanda Urrejola from Cry Macho and Sara Becker from The Movie Teller, who will depict Blanca Trueba at different stages of her life.

Additional members of the ensemble include Alfonso Herrera from Sense8 as Esteban Trueba, with Nicole Wallace from My Fault and Dolores Fonzi—who is also a director with her current film, Belen, competing at the 73rd San Sebastian Film Festival—playing the clairvoyant Clara del Valle at various points in her life. Following its festival run, Belen is set to debut on Prime Video.

Allende participated in a panel with showrunners Francisca Alegria, Urrejola, and Andrés Wood, where they delved into the intricacies of adapting this monumental work into a television series.

With over 70 million copies sold worldwide, The House of the Spirits is celebrated as one of the most significant literary works of the 20th century. Its previous cinematic iteration in 1993 featured prominent stars like Meryl Streep, Jeremy Irons, and Antonio Banderas, but it received criticism for its disjointed accents. Reflecting on the film in a 2021 Variety interview, Allende expressed her thoughts about the adaptation, stating that the casting priorities have changed significantly over the years. “Nowadays, it can include any language—Mayan, Spanish, Quechua—and there’s no need for a star-studded lineup, just talented actors,” she observed.

The production is spearheaded by FilmNation, an Academy Award-winning team known for Anora and Conclave, in collaboration with Fabula, the Chilean Oscar-winning production company behind The Eternal Memory and A Fantastic Woman.

Allende, alongside Eva Longoria of Desperate Housewives fame and Courtney Saladino from Jessica Jones, serves as executive producer for this exciting adaptation.

Scheduled for an exclusive release on Prime Video, the series will be accessible to audiences in over 240 countries and territories around the globe. This adaptation marks another significant addition to Amazon’s expanding portfolio of Latin American original productions, which includes notable titles like Betty La Fea: La Historia Continúa, Desconectados 2: Reconectados, Vencer o Morir, Menem, and Sayen.
