Brazil and Chile Unite for the Emotional Journey of “The Sky That We Paint”

Brazil’s Sambaqui Cultural has partnered with Chilean filmmaker Camilo Becerra on his latest project, “The Sky That We Paint” (“El cielo que pintamos”). This collaboration is poised to expand international cinema horizons, as Sambaqui Cultural joins forces with Storyboard Media, who previously worked with Becerra on his acclaimed film “Maybe It’s True What They Say About Us.”

“Maybe It’s True…” premiered at the San Sebastian Festival last year, subsequently making its way to streaming platforms such as Prime Video after captivating audiences at renowned festivals in Göteborg, Chicago, and Havana.

The Storyline

“The Sky That We Paint” follows the poignant tale of three troubled teenage siblings: Ana (15), Matías (16), and Iggy (16). As they navigate the tumultuous waters of youth, trauma, and societal taboos, they are bound by shared grief and an intense desire to escape their harsh realities. Ana and Iggy’s bond grows into a passionate yet destructive relationship, leaving them with enduring scars. Years later, the siblings reunite in search of Matías, hoping to reclaim their lost innocence, only to realize that time has irrevocably changed them and their circumstances. Rising Chilean stars Clemente Rodríguez (“El Conde”) and Octavio Bernasconi (“La Jauría”) are set to portray the lead roles.

Collaboration and Vision

Joana Nin of Sambaqui Cultural expressed her excitement about joining forces with Becerra, stating, “I truly appreciated the conceptual depth of Camilo Becerra’s previous film, ‘Maybe What They Say About Us Is True’, and I was eager to collaborate on his new project.”

Nin further emphasized the current flourishing state of cinema in Brazil, noting, “Sambaqui Cultural has experienced significant growth in recent years. This is a great moment for international collaborations, and I’m thrilled to finalize this co-production agreement with Storyboard Media here at the San Sebastián Festival.”

A Bright Future for Sambaqui Cultural

Beyond her production role, Nin has directed several documentaries and feature films, including the award-winning “Captive Hearts.” Her co-founder Ade Muri has contributed to notable projects like “Não vamos pagar nada” and “Pai em Dobro.”

Carlos Núñez, co-founder of Storyboard Media alongside Gabriela Sandoval, remarked on the importance of this partnership, stating, “At Storyboard Media, we have refined our production model to connect Latin American talent with global audiences. This is an exceptional moment to maximize international co-productions and expand our strategic partnerships.”

San Sebastián Film Festival Highlights

This co-production agreement is part of a broader trend, as Chile continues to gain recognition in international film festivals. Notably, at the San Sebastián Festival, other Chilean projects are making waves, including the Cannes Un Certain Regard winner, “The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo”, and Dominga Sotomayor’s “Swim to Me” (“Limpia”), both competing in the festival’s Horizontes Latinos sidebar.

Storyboard Media is among the numerous distinguished delegates from Chile, including producer Giancarlo Nasi, whose company Quijote Films has produced Chile’s submission to the Oscars, “The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo.”

Chilean Works in Progress

Several works from Chile are being featured in the festival’s Co-Production Forum, including “Sublime Pact” by Ignacio Juricic, animated feature “Winnipeg Seeds of Hope” by Marianne Mayer-Beckh, as well as “Do Not Let Me Die Alone” by Renan Flumian.

Looking Ahead

The excitement around “The Sky That We Paint” resonates with a rising wave of creativity in Latin America, indicative of an era ripe for storytelling that traverses cultural boundaries and speaks to universal truths. As production and exploration continue to thrive, Sambaqui Cultural, along with its partners, stands poised to leave a lasting mark in the cinematic landscape.
