13-Year-Old Boy Fights for His Life After Shooting Outside Dunkin’ Donuts in Queens

The devastating plight of a 13-year-old boy clinging to life following a tragic shooting outside a Dunkin’ Donuts in Queens has left his family and community in shock. Sanjay Samuel, a student eagerly looking forward to his future, is currently on life support after sustaining a serious gunshot wound to the head.

According to his mother, Vilene Griffith, Sanjay is considered “brain dead” after the harrowing incident that took place on a Monday morning while he was on his way to school. “Miracles do happen, and I’m trusting God for Sanjay to get up,” she expressed, hoping for a turn in her son’s fate. Sanjay recently graduated from middle school and had aspirations of becoming a firefighter, a dream that now hangs in the balance.

“Nothing is going on. He’s not breathing on his own. He’s not doing nothing,” Griffith lamented in an emotional interview.

Witness accounts detail that the gunman, a youth himself, approached the coffee shop on a scooter. After a brief altercation with Sanjay, he produced a firearm and shot the boy before fleeing the scene. This unidentified suspect was described as having an afro and carrying a distinct “JAWS” bookbag.

Emergency responders rushed Sanjay to Cohen Children’s Medical Center, where doctors have indicated that the bullet remains lodged in the back of his head. His father, Theophilus Samuel, relayed the difficult decision made by medical staff not to conduct surgery to remove the bullet, citing the potential for greater harm.

As the investigation unfolds, the motive behind the shooting remains unclear. A 14-year-old classmate mentioned that Sanjay was typically well-liked but may have recently become involved with a troubling group of peers. “It might have been the group he was with… a little situation happened that was way before,” she noted, hinting at potential conflicts that could have contributed to the violence.

No arrests have yet been made, and police continue to seek information about the shooter. In a heartfelt statement, Sanjay’s father condemned the assailant, calling him a “coward.” He expressed his incredulity at how someone could live with the knowledge of taking another person’s life, even in the moment of adrenaline-driven rage.

Griffith has publicly voiced her anguish, questioning the attacker about why they felt compelled to harm her son. “I lost my son, and your mom lost you, also,” she tragically concluded, highlighting the deep scars such violence leaves on families and communities alike.
