“Locke & Key” co-creator Meredith Averill has been appointed the new showrunner for Amazon‘s anticipated television adaptation of the beloved romantasy novel “Fourth Wing.”
The series draws its narrative from the best-selling “The Empyrean” book series by author Rebecca Yarros. “Fourth Wing” immerses viewers in the perilous realm of Basgiath War College, where the stark ultimatum is survival: graduate or perish. The story follows twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail, who was destined for a life of obscurity until her mother—a high-ranking military general—diverts her life’s course, compelling her to compete alongside countless others vying to become dragon riders, the most prestigious warriors in the kingdom of Navarre.
Yarros’ “The Empyrean” series kicked off with the release of the New York Times best-seller “Fourth Wing” in May 2023. This was followed by the sequel, “Iron Flame,” launched in November 2023, and the third installation, “Onyx Storm,” which is set for release in January 2024. Information about the forthcoming fourth and fifth books, including titles and release dates, remains undisclosed at this time.
Originally greenlit for development in October 2023, the “Fourth Wing” series is a collaborative venture produced by Amazon MGM Studios and Michael B. Jordan’s Outlier Society. Currently, the project has not yet received an official series order, nor does it have a cast attached at this stage.
Meredith Averill takes over as showrunner for “Fourth Wing” after Moira Walley-Beckett (“Anne With an E” creator and “Breaking Bad” writer) stepped down from the position in July. Walley-Beckett had signed on in the summer of 2024, but Averill’s onboarding signals a new creative direction for the series.
In addition to Averill, the executive producing team for “Fourth Wing” includes Michael B. Jordan and Outlier president Elizabeth Raposo, alongside author Rebecca Yarros. The production will also feature contributions from Liz Pelletier and Sherryl Clark, who are producing through Premeditated, the sister company of “Fourth Wing” publisher Entangled Publishing. Outlier Society’s executive vice president of TV, Stefano Agosto, will take on the role of co-executive producer.
