The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is now celebrating its fifteenth year in existence. Over this time, it has expanded vastly, introducing a plethora of films, television shows, web series, and one-shots. This sprawling universe can present quite a challenge for fans to navigate, whether it comes to catching up with the latest releases or understanding the complex timeline.

To assist, we have constructed a detailed chronological timeline of the Marvel movies and shows, guiding you on the optimal viewing order to help you enjoy this renowned cinematic saga. Alternatively, for those who prefer to watch based on release dates, we have also compiled this information for your convenience.

Marvel itself has provided an official timeline for its films in Marvel Studios: The First Ten Years, detailing when each entry falls in relation to the series’ overarching storyline.

Marvel’s Official Timeline

Here’s a breakdown of the MCU’s established timeline:

  • 1943-1945: Captain America: The First Avenger
  • 1995: Captain Marvel
  • 2010: Iron Man
  • 2011: Iron Man 2, The Incredible Hulk, Thor
  • 2012: The Avengers, Iron Man 3
  • 2013: Thor: The Dark World
  • 2014: Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy
  • 2015: Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ant-Man
  • 2016: Captain America: Civil War, Spider-Man: Homecoming
  • 2016/2017: Doctor Strange
  • 2017: Black Panther, Thor: Ragnarok, Avengers: Infinity War, Ant-Man & the Wasp

Currently, we are in Phase 6, which represents the concluding arc of the Multiverse Saga, having recently begun with The Fantastic Four: First Steps.

How to Watch the Marvel Movies and TV Shows in Chronological Order

Keep in mind that the MCU’s timeline has its share of complexities as it advances. For instance, Doctor Strange starts prior to Captain America: Civil War, yet has a time jump that extends its events past the latter, while Black Panther unfolds shortly after Civil War but is likely set before much of Doctor Strange.

Inconsistencies also arise; a notable example is Spider-Man: Homecoming, which claims to be set eight years post the New York attack in The Avengers. This arrival date implies it takes place in 2020, two or three years post-Avengers: Infinity War, posing a conflict as Infinity War is cited as being set in 2017.

These small discrepancies serve as reminders that while the chronological timeline is an interesting framework, it should be taken lightly—what matters most is enjoying the viewing experience.

For visuals, Marvel recently released a comprehensive sequence of all post-credit scenes leading up to Endgame in a Twitter thread.

Marvel’s official site also maintains its own timeline order. We’ve integrated this to inform our listings of the phases, particularly for Phases Four and Five.

Since January 2024, Disney+ has broadened its timeline to include Marvel’s Netflix series, leading to a revised order on our end.
