A tragic incident unfolded in Dallas as anti-ICE gunman Joshua Jahn unleashed his pent-up anger towards immigration enforcement and the federal government, culminating in what officials describe as an act of terrorism.

During a press conference on Thursday, Acting US Attorney Nancy Larson revealed that handwritten notes recovered from Jahn’s home indicated his perception of ICE operations as tantamount to “human trafficking.” She elaborated that he viewed the Dallas immigration office as merely a site for “people showing up to collect a dirty paycheck.”

Jahn, who acted alone according to investigators, utilized an “8MM bolt-action rifle,” which was legally purchased just a month before the attack, explained FBI Special Agent Joe Rothrock during the press briefing.

Prior to the shooting incident, Larson mentioned that Jahn drove to the targeted building where he positioned himself around 3 a.m., carrying a “large ladder” atop his vehicle for access to the rooftop.

Authorities suspect he employed this ladder to reach the roof of the immigration attorney building from where he fired indiscriminately upon the ICE facility, resulting in the death of one detainee and critically injuring two others.

Details Surrounding the Dallas ICE Facility Shooting

  • A gunman, identified as 29-year-old Joshua Jahn, initiated shots directed at an ICE van at a Dallas detention center early on September 24.
  • Reports indicate that Jahn commenced his attack when detainees were in the midst of being transferred, as the facility’s portcullis was wide open.
  • The shooting resulted in one fatality and two serious injuries; Jahn was later found deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound on a nearby rooftop.
  • Evidence gathered revealed writing on the cartridges, one of which explicitly stated “ANTI-ICE,” according to the FBI’s findings.
  • Investigators are treating the event as an act of “targeted violence,” revealed Joe Rothrock during the press conference.

In addition, Larson recounted that another note found emphasized Jahn’s “hatred” for the federal government, expressed in crude terms that she refrained from disclosing.

A separate note suggested that Jahn acted independently, and alluded to the investigation he anticipated would follow his actions. He wrote, “Yes, it was just me and my brain,” taunting authorities about the digital evidence, stating, “Good luck with the digital footprint,” hinting at possibly erasing data from his devices.

Larson reiterated her description of the incident as “the very definition of terrorism” while Rothrock acknowledged that Jahn’s notes reflected an awareness of the potential for additional casualties as he strategically planned the timing of his attack, knowing detainees would be present at that hour.

In response to the gunfire, ATF and ICE agents bravely put themselves at risk to evacuate individuals from harm’s way as the shooting unfolded.
