The Pratt Manhattan Gallery presents its latest exhibition, In Our Time: Eleven Artists + W.E.B. Du Bois, featuring a lineup of prominent contemporary artists, from Derrick Adams to Carrie Mae Weems and Theaster Gates. Each artist engages critically with the works of the groundbreaking sociologist W.E.B. Du Bois.

Curated by Loretta Yarlow, this exhibition is the second installment in a series that prompts a renewed investigation into Du Bois’s vast contributions to civil rights, sociology, history, and activism. Yarlow previously presented Du Bois In Our Time in 2013 at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where the research of Du Bois remains deeply archived. Now, a decade later, In Our Time broadens its scope for an audience facing a vastly transformed sociopolitical climate.

Yarlow emphasizes, “The artists featured here do not treat Du Bois as a distant historical figure, but instead as a revolutionary thinker whose insights continue to resonate profoundly in current fights for justice and visibility. The Pratt Manhattan Gallery, as a central hub of New York City’s contemporary art scene, facilitates a diverse range of works that reveal both changes and ongoing issues in our social and political environments, illustrating how Du Bois’s ideas remain a critical call to action.”

The exhibition comprises various artistic mediums, including photography, painting, sculpture, video, and text-based works. Each of the 11 featured artists offers their unique perspective on Du Bois’s writings and activism, tapping into his exploration of themes like double consciousness, data on Black advancement, women’s suffrage, and environmental advocacy.

In Our Time: Eleven Artists + W.E.B. Du Bois will be on display at the Pratt Manhattan Gallery from September 26 through December 20, 2025, with an exciting public opening reception scheduled for Thursday, September 25, from 6 to 8 PM.
