Palm Identification: A Revolutionary Step in Healthcare Identity Management

This week, Amazon announced a groundbreaking partnership with NYU Langone to introduce Amazon One, a cutting-edge contactless palm screening technology, across the health system.

Launched in 2020, Amazon One was designed to enhance customer experience by offering fast, easy, and contactless identity management. Users enroll their palm with a connected Amazon One device to create a unique palm signature for future authentication. The technology, initially deployed in Amazon and Whole Foods locations, aims to expand to various settings where identity management is crucial, including healthcare facilities.

Recognizing the significance of secure identity management in healthcare, Amazon has chosen NYU Langone, one of the largest health systems in the country, for the implementation of Amazon One. With millions of outpatient visits annually, NYU Langone prioritizes accurate patient identification to ensure seamless care delivery.

Identity management plays a vital role in healthcare due to increasing security concerns, privacy issues, and identity theft risks. Accurate patient identification is essential for providing trusted data for patient care, analytics, reporting, and other purposes. Amazon One boasts a 99.9999% accuracy rate and leverages palm and vein imagery for precise biometric matching.

Nader Mherabi, EVP and Chief Digital Officer at NYU Langone, highlights the organization’s commitment to leveraging technology to enhance patient experience. Amazon One’s rapid recognition time and unique palm signature offer a simplified check-in process for patients, reducing potential stress during their visit.

Streamlining patient experience is crucial in healthcare, where complex check-in processes can be overwhelming for individuals seeking care. In addition to Amazon One, companies like Clear are also innovating in identity management for healthcare, integrating secure verification processes with existing systems.

Identity management extends beyond hospital settings to personal health devices, with companies like Apple and Google investing in biometric authentication technologies. These advancements are pivotal in securely storing and accessing personal health information on mobile devices.

While competition in the identity management space is fierce, Amazon One’s use of palm scanning technology sets it apart. Embracing this innovative approach signifies a significant leap forward in healthcare identity management, promising a more seamless and secure patient experience.

As healthcare continues to evolve, technologies like Amazon One have the potential to revolutionize how identity is managed in the industry, offering enhanced security and efficiency for both providers and patients.
