The TV adaptation of Sarah J. Maas’s beloved book series “A Court of Thorns and Roses” has hit a roadblock as Hulu officially scraps the project. The adaptation, produced by Disney’s 20th Television, has been in development at Hulu since March 2021. Maas collaborated on the TV scripts with Ronald D. Moore, the creator of “Outlander.”
Updates on the show have been scarce, with the writers and actors strikes of Summer 2023 causing a pause in scripted production and development across the industry. Earlier this year, it was reported that the “ACOTAR” TV series was no longer in active development at Hulu and was not being pitched to other platforms. Despite this, Disney’s 20th Television holds the rights to the project until late Summer 2025.
Sources close to the project have revealed that Maas intends to explore other options for the TV adaptation rights once the Disney option expires. Both 20th Television and Hulu have declined to comment on the situation, and Maas’s representatives have yet to respond to inquiries.
The “A Court of Thorns and Roses” novel series follows Feyre Archeron, a 19-year-old huntress who is taken to the magical land of Prythian after killing a faerie wolf. As she spends time with Tamlin, one of the seven High Lords of Prythian, Feyre discovers that her understanding of the faerie world is far from the truth.
After the success of the first book, Maas released four sequels: “A Court of Mist and Fury,” “A Court of Wings and Ruin,” “A Court of Frost and Starlight,” and “A Court of Silver Flames.” A sixth book is in the works, although no release date has been announced yet. Fans of the series will have to wait and see if a new studio and platform pick up the TV adaptation in the future.
