Netflix Orders Pilot for “A Different World” Sequel Series
Netflix is moving forward with the sequel series to “A Different World” by giving out one of the only pilot orders in its history for the comedy project. The plan is to shoot the pilot at the beginning of the summer to gauge the show’s tone and the chemistry among the ensemble cast. As of now, no cast members have been confirmed for the project.
Unlike traditional broadcast networks, Netflix does not plan to engage in a traditional pilot season where shows compete for limited slots. This move by Netflix marks a departure from its usual straight-to-series orders or script-to-series deals for shows. The streaming giant’s decision to shoot a pilot signals a significant financial gamble, as a show that looks good on paper may not translate well on screen.
While Netflix’s shift to shooting pilots may have widespread repercussions in the industry, it reflects a changing landscape where the focus is increasingly on the bottom line. The sequel to “A Different World” was first reported to be in development in August 2024 and will revisit Hillman College, a fictional historically Black university, following the daughter of original series characters Whitley and Dwayne.
The series is helmed by writer, executive producer, and showrunner Felicia Pride, with Debbie Allen, Mandy Summers, Tom Werner, Gina Prince-Bythewood, and Reggie Bythewood also serving as executive producers. Allen, who produced and directed the original series, is set to direct the new pilot as well.
“A Different World” originally spun off from “The Cosby Show” and followed Denise Huxtable as she navigated life at Hillman College. After Bonet’s departure following the first season, the focus shifted to a diverse ensemble cast including Jasmine Guy, Kadeem Hardison, and Dawnn Lewis.
