Jean-Charles de Castelbajac is a designer who has been pushing boundaries and defying traditional definitions for nearly six decades. His iconic pieces, such as the teddy bear coat from fall 1988, have become synonymous with his name. A recent event in Toulouse showcased his first major exhibition, titled “Imagination au Pouvoir” (“Imagination at Work”), at Les Abattoirs, a contemporary art museum housed in a former slaughterhouse.
The exhibition features not only Castelbajac’s best-known creations but also original works created in collaboration with renowned artists such as Keith Haring, Robert Mapplethorpe, and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Lauriane Gricourt, director of Les Abbatoirs, explains that Castelbajac was chosen for the museum’s first-ever fashion exhibition because of his refusal to be pigeonholed. Castelbajac’s upbringing, marked by creativity as a refuge from a challenging childhood, has informed his artistic vision throughout his career.
