Jean-Charles de Castelbajac is a designer who has been pushing boundaries and defying traditional definitions for nearly six decades. His iconic pieces, such as the teddy bear coat from fall 1988, have become synonymous with his name. A recent event in Toulouse showcased his first major exhibition, titled “Imagination au Pouvoir” (“Imagination at Work”), at Les Abattoirs, a contemporary art museum housed in a former slaughterhouse.

The exhibition features not only Castelbajac’s best-known creations but also original works created in collaboration with renowned artists such as Keith Haring, Robert Mapplethorpe, and Jean-Michel Basquiat. It offers a kaleidoscopic view of the designer’s career, highlighting his foresight and creativity. The colorful vestments designed for World Youth Day in 1985 and the reopening of Notre-Dame Cathedral add a spiritual dimension to the exhibition.

Despite the extensive collection of over 300 pieces on display, Castelbajac insists that this is not a retrospective. He prefers to create work that will be understood and appreciated in the future, rather than dwelling on the past. The exhibition, curated by Pascal Rodriguez, showcases Castelbajac’s diverse range of creations, from upcycled streetwear to high-performance sportswear and political statements.

Lauriane Gricourt, director of Les Abbatoirs, explains that Castelbajac was chosen for the museum’s first-ever fashion exhibition because of his refusal to be pigeonholed. His work transcends traditional boundaries, blending art, fashion, and social commentary in a unique and rich tapestry. Castelbajac’s upbringing, marked by creativity as a refuge from a challenging childhood, has informed his artistic vision throughout his career.

For fans of fashion and art alike, the “Imagination au Pouvoir” exhibition offers a rare glimpse into the mind of a visionary designer. Castelbajac’s ability to merge art history with fashion design sets him apart in the industry, showcasing his innovative approach to creativity. As visitors explore the exhibition, they are taken on a journey through Castelbajac’s evolution as an artist, from his early experiments to his lasting impact on the fashion world.
