The American public quickly discerned, shortly after Elon Musk donned his DOGE persona and began rummaging through the federal government, that the purported mission to eliminate waste, fraud, and abuse masked a more insidious ideological agenda.
, more ideological agenda.
When Musk sought access to Social Security data, Judge Ellen Hollander raised an eyebrow:
While the American public may support the Trump Administration’s aim to eliminate fraud, waste, and inefficiency from federal agencies, including the Social Security Administration (SSA), one must ask:
By what means are these goals to be achieved?
The DOGE Team appears to be on an expansive fishing expedition within the SSA, hunting for a nonexistent fraud epidemic based on little more than mere suspicion. It’s akin to searching for a needle in a haystack, all while lacking any solid evidence that said needle is even there.
To aid this expedition, the SSA granted DOGE Team members unrestricted access to the personal and sensitive data of millions of Americans. This includes Social Security numbers, medical records, mental health histories, hospitalization records, drivers’ license information, bank and credit card details, tax documents, income and work histories, as well as birth and marriage certificates, and home and work addresses.
However, the defendants, armed with so-called experts on the DOGE Team, failed to articulate a single valid reason for needing such unfettered access to the SSA’s complete records, thereby endangering the personal, confidential, and private information that millions of Americans have entrusted to their government. Indeed, there has been no justification for why a more nuanced, measured approach could not suffice.
Instead, the government clings to its mantra of modernizing the system and combatting fraud. Its chosen method resembles a sledgehammer approach to swatting a fly. In my assessment, the plaintiffs are likely to prevail in their claim that this action is arbitrary and capricious, in clear violation of the Privacy Act and the Administrative Procedure Act. The plaintiffs have also shown that their members will suffer irreparable harm without a Temporary Restraining Order (TRO), the balance of equities favors them, and the TRO serves the public interest.
DOGE is, in essence, a con. Republicans in Congress appear to be complicit, leveraging the fraud narrative to undermine cherished programs like Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.
The American populace sees through this ruse, and the courts do as well.
Judicial rulings matter greatly; they reinforce what many Americans already believe, supported by facts and testimonies from authoritative figures.
Trump and Musk may find it challenging to deceive the public if the courts continue to unveil the truth, as demonstrated by the latest ruling which represented a striking dismantling of the DOGE charade.
