BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

A PROCLAMATION

On this Greek Independence Day, we honor the wisdom and determination of the Greek people who broke free from tyranny, rekindled the spirit of freedom that originated on their ancient land, and reaffirmed their position as the birthplace of Western civilization.

Centuries before our own nation embraced the ideals of liberty 250 years ago, the concept of self-governance emerged in Greece, granting citizens a direct role in shaping their country’s future. This enduring spirit carried the Greek people through long periods of foreign domination and adversity. With unyielding courage, pride in their heritage, and faith in their future, they initiated a revolution on March 25, 1821. This noble campaign dismantled centuries-old chains of authoritarian rule. Over nearly a decade, their struggle for freedom was forged through intense conflict and sacrifice, upheld by the timeless belief that every nation possesses the right to self-determination.

Similar to Greece, the United States was established on the principles of republican self-governance, sustained by citizens who uphold life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness as their sacred rights. The histories of our two nations demonstrate that oppressed people will overcome any challenge to create a just government, protect their legacy, and ensure liberty for future generations.

Today, the Greek American community enriches our nation’s narrative through their entrepreneurship, faith, and unwavering commitment to the principles that have defined American life since 1776. Greece stands alongside the United States in our shared values, dedication to defending Western ideals, and commitment to global peace.

As America celebrates 250 years of independence, we draw inspiration from the Greek people’s example of refusing to relinquish sovereignty while maintaining the spirit of self-governance. Our two nations are allies in freedom, bonded by history, tested by adversity, and optimistic about a bright future. On this 205th Greek Independence Day, we honor the enduring spirit that began in Athens and inspired our Founding Fathers in Philadelphia, whose dedication to human freedom continues to inspire people across the Atlantic.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, DONALD J. TRUMP, President of the United States of America, by the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States, proclaim March 25, 2026, as Greek Independence Day: A National Day of Celebration of Greek and American Democracy. I urge the people of the United States to observe this day with fitting ceremonies and activities.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this twenty-fourth day of March, in the year of our Lord two thousand twenty-six, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and fiftieth.

DONALD J. TRUMP
