In the foreword to the new book Great Women Photographers, Fiona Rogers asserts the significance of celebrating and documenting the work of women in photography, stating, “If ‘greatness’ has long been defined by visibility and remembrance, then the continued documentation and celebration of women’s photographic practice is not only relevant but essential.”
This upcoming volume showcases a vast array of photographic works from 68 different countries, spanning nearly two centuries. It marks the fourth installment in Phaidon’s series highlighting influential women in the arts, with previous volumes focusing on mediums like painting and sculpting.
The book highlights over 250 female photographers, organized alphabetically. Each entry includes newly commissioned essays by foremost scholars, along with iconic photographs from the featured artists.
Encompassing styles from photojournalism and editorial portraiture to cameraless photography and conceptual landscapes, Great Women Photographers serves not only as a visual chronicle of women’s contributions but also, as noted by the publisher, as “a new lens on the world, inviting readers to discover, engage with, and be inspired by the work of some of the world’s greatest image-makers.”
