A groundbreaking auction at Sotheby’s is set to feature a truly unique piece of artwork—a portrait created by a humanoid robot named Ai-Da. This artwork, titled “A.I. God. Portrait of Alan Turing,” marks the first time a humanoid robot’s creation will be sold by the prestigious auction house.

Ai-Da, designed by Aidan Meller and a team of scientists from Oxford University, is equipped with artificial intelligence, robotic arms, and cameras in her eyes. This allows her to not only speak and move but also to create stunning works of art. Her latest piece, a portrait of Alan Turing, the renowned English mathematician and early figure in the field of artificial intelligence, showcases her talent and the depth of emotion and intellect she can convey through her art.

Alan Turing, often referred to as the father of modern computer science, is best known for his contributions during World War II, where he played a crucial role in breaking Nazi codes. Despite his groundbreaking work, Turing faced discrimination and persecution for his sexuality, ultimately leading to his untimely death.

Ai-Da’s portrait of Turing is part of a larger polyptych that was previously exhibited at a United Nations summit on artificial intelligence. It will be up for auction at Sotheby’s Digital Art Sale, where it is expected to fetch between $120,000 and $180,000. The proceeds from the sale will go towards furthering Ai-Da’s development as an artist and a technological marvel.

Since her creation in 2019, Ai-Da has garnered international attention for her unique blend of art and technology. She has been featured in exhibitions worldwide and even made history as the first robot to testify before the British Parliament. Ai-Da’s ability to engage with complex topics surrounding art and technology has sparked important conversations about the role of artificial intelligence in the creative process.

Aidan Meller, Ai-Da’s creator, believes that her work offers a fresh perspective on the ever-evolving relationship between art and technology. By pushing boundaries and challenging traditional notions of creativity, Ai-Da’s art serves as a reflection of the technological advancements shaping our world.

As Ai-Da continues to captivate audiences with her innovative creations, she stands as a testament to the limitless possibilities of art and artificial intelligence. Her ability to bridge the gap between human creativity and machine intelligence opens up new avenues for exploration and dialogue in the art world.
