If you’ve ever been in the middle of cooking and suddenly realized that your pot is about to boil over, you’re not alone. The sight of boiling liquid spilling over the sides of the pot is a common kitchen mishap that can happen in the blink of an eye. But is there a way to prevent this from happening in the first place?

One popular kitchen hack that has been making the rounds on social media is placing a wooden spoon across the top of the pot. The idea is that the wooden spoon will somehow stop the pot from boiling over. But does this trick actually work? The answer is yes, but only for a limited amount of time.

The reason why pots boil over in the first place is due to the addition of ingredients like carbohydrates and proteins. When these ingredients come into contact with heated water molecules, their properties change and structures rearrange, leading to rapid boiling and the formation of bubbles.

Carbohydrates, such as plant starches found in pasta, rice, and other grains, are the main culprits for causing pots to boil over. When these starches interact with heated water, they form a gel that becomes sticky and can cause the temperature of the boiling solution to rise above 100°C. Similarly, proteins like casein found in milk can also contribute to the formation of bubbles that rise quickly.

So how does a wooden spoon help prevent the bubbles from rising over the edge of the pot? By placing a wooden spoon over a boiling pot, the porous surface of the wood acts as an interruption to the bubbles, lowering the surface temperature and providing a surface for the bubbles to burst. This temporarily prevents the bubbles from climbing over the edge of the pot.

However, the effectiveness of the wooden spoon trick is limited. As the spoon is exposed to heat and moisture, it will eventually reach the same temperature as the liquid and lose its ability to reduce the surface temperature or burst bubbles. This is why some people claim that the spoon hack doesn’t work in the long run.

Instead of relying solely on the wooden spoon trick, it’s better to stay present and attentive while cooking in the kitchen. Stirring the pot or using the wooden spoon as a fan can also help prevent boiling over. Additionally, using a larger pot and adjusting the heat can reduce the likelihood of pots boiling over.

In conclusion, while the wooden spoon trick may offer a temporary solution to prevent pots from boiling over, it’s important to remain vigilant and use other cooking techniques to avoid kitchen mishaps. So next time you’re cooking, keep an eye on the pot and be mindful of the ingredients you’re using to prevent any messy spills.
