Connecticut’s Summer Committee Sets Its Sights on High-Performing Homeschoolers While DCF Evades Responsibility

Following a significant victory for Connecticut’s homeschooling advocates, who successfully resisted new regulations during the latest legislative session, state lawmakers are preparing to convene a summer committee aimed at exploring new oversight measures. This move comes despite an abundance of evidence indicating that homeschoolers are excelling in both mental health and academic performance, often outshining their public school counterparts.

Connecticut invests over $13,000 in taxpayer funds for each public school student annually, covering everything from building upkeep to curricular materials. In stark contrast, homeschooling families receive no state funding and bear the full financial burden of education. Remarkably, these homeschoolers consistently score higher on standardized tests, report greater life satisfaction, and demonstrate a significantly lower likelihood of experiencing abuse or neglect.

Research substantiates that students who are homeschooled not only achieve elevated academic outcomes but also enjoy superior mental health conditions. Long-term homeschoolers exhibit heightened levels of optimism and gratitude, paired with lower instances of anxiety and feelings of helplessness when compared to their public school peers. National statistics reveal that homeschooled children are approximately 40% less likely to suffer fatal outcomes from child abuse or neglect than their traditionally educated counterparts—a statistic that starkly contradicts the narrative driving calls for stricter regulations.

Ironically, the Office of the Child Advocate has cited rare but tragic cases of abuse—where parents allegedly withdrew children from school under the guise of homeschooling—as a rationale for imposing new regulations. However, the Child Advocate has not provided any documented instances where homeschooling was exploited as a means to evade oversight. Instead, evidence suggests that these tragic incidents stem from failures within the Department of Children and Families (DCF) to adequately monitor children already in their care, not from any gaps in homeschooling legislation.

Sheila Matthews, co-founder of AbleChild, notes that this issue is not a new phenomenon. She references the notorious case of Sandy Hook shooter Adam Lanza, who went an entire eighth-grade year without any intervention or explanation from the educational system or the DCF. Despite being deemed mentally unfit for school by a psychiatrist who later lost his license due to criminal conduct, the state failed to regulate this psychiatrist’s prescriptions, which included powerful psychotropic medications for other children, one of whom is now reportedly brain damaged. To this day, many of Lanza’s academic and mental health records remain hidden from public scrutiny by the state of Connecticut.

In recent weeks, thousands of parents and children have gathered at the Capitol, advocating for the majority of homeschoolers who provide nurturing and high-quality education. They argue that imposing additional regulations would unjustly penalize successful families for systemic failures elsewhere. As discussions heat up, one must ponder the question: Why impose restrictions on a community that, without any state support, consistently outperforms the public education system?

Connecticut’s upcoming summer discussions are poised to highlight a growing divide between families advocating for educational freedom and a government intent on exerting control over an area it does not fund. The results of these discussions could have lasting implications for the future of homeschooling in the state.
