NHL analyst and former Norris Trophy winner P.K. Subban recently stirred up controversy by suggesting that if Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl win the Stanley Cup this year, their jerseys should be retired immediately. Subban made this bold statement during an appearance on ESPN’s First Take, emphasizing the exceptional talent and impact that McDavid and Draisaitl have had on the game.

Both McDavid and Draisaitl have already amassed an impressive collection of individual awards, including Hart Trophies, Rocket Richard Trophies, Art Ross Trophies, and multiple All-Star selections. However, the one accolade that has eluded them so far is a Stanley Cup championship. Subban believes that winning the Stanley Cup would solidify their legacy as two of the greatest players in NHL history.

In Subban’s words, “If McDavid and Draisaitl get it done, they are immediate Hall of Famers. These guys are going into the Hall of Fame, and rightfully so.” He also mentioned the significance of Stuart Skinner potentially joining them in that elite group if the Oilers clinch the Stanley Cup this year.

Despite their individual achievements, McDavid and Draisaitl have yet to taste the ultimate success of winning a Stanley Cup. Their quest for the coveted championship took a positive turn in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final, where they played a crucial role in the Edmonton Oilers’ victory.

Draisaitl showcased his scoring prowess by netting two goals in the game, including the fastest goal in a Stanley Cup Final, while McDavid contributed with two assists, including the primary assist on Draisaitl’s game-winning goal in overtime. The dynamic duo’s chemistry and skill were on full display, highlighting their importance to the Oilers’ success.

Looking ahead, the Florida Panthers will have their work cut out for them in containing McDavid and Draisaitl as they aim to bounce back in Game 2. Oilers’ fans are hopeful that the tandem’s dominance will continue to shine as they strive to secure a 2-0 series lead.

In conclusion, Subban’s declaration and the stellar performance of McDavid and Draisaitl in Game 1 underscore the magnitude of their potential legacy and the impact they could have on the sport if they claim the Stanley Cup this year. The hockey world eagerly awaits to see if McDavid and Draisaitl can fulfill their championship aspirations and etch their names in NHL history.
