Jeanette Vizguerra Fights Against Immigration Detention

Less than a day after being released from immigration detention, Jeanette Vizguerra made a powerful statement on the steps of a federal courthouse in downtown Denver. She vowed to continue her battle against the crackdown that still looms over her, threatening to force her out of the country.

Vizguerra’s struggle to regain her freedom had garnered widespread support since her arrest in March, making her one of the most prominent figures affected by President Trump’s aggressive deportation policies. It was only after a federal judge intervened in her case that she was granted a chance at bail last week.

Addressing her supporters in Spanish, Vizguerra expressed gratitude for the collective effort that led to her release. She emphasized her commitment to persist in the fight against unjust immigration practices.

For months, Vizguerra’s advocates had organized vigils outside the Aurora detention center where she was held. Upon her release, they welcomed her with open arms, tears, chants, incense, and music.

As Vizguerra called for unity in opposing immigration arrests and deportations, her supporters echoed her sentiments with chants of “Free them all!” and “¡SĂ se puede!”

Reflecting on her time in detention, Vizguerra highlighted the stories of countless others who faced similar struggles. She encouraged those still in custody to remain resilient and continue fighting for their rights.

Vizguerra’s temporary release marked a significant legal victory, achieved through the pro bono efforts of dedicated immigration attorneys who challenged ICE’s actions.

While she remains out on bail, Vizguerra’s legal team is actively contesting her deportation orders and pursuing additional legal avenues to secure her status.

Vizguerra’s journey underscores the challenges faced by undocumented immigrants navigating the complex legal system. Despite the obstacles, she remains steadfast in her advocacy for those still detained.

Looking ahead, Vizguerra intends to advocate for detained individuals and investigate the conditions within immigration detention facilities, aiming to shed light on the harsh realities faced by those inside.

Her release may symbolize a personal victory, but Vizguerra recognizes the broader systemic issues at play. She stresses the need for solidarity and support to combat the current administration’s harsh immigration policies.
