Attorney General Pam Bondi is intensifying her efforts to cleanse the Department of Justice (DOJ) of officials she deems corrupt.
A report from The Hill reveals that Bondi, in concert with President Trump, is systematically “culling the ranks of career officials” who have connections to the Democratic establishment, which they accuse of targeting conservatives during the Biden administration.
The report states:
Maurene Comey, a federal prosecutor based in New York and daughter of the former FBI director, was dismissed on Wednesday without any given reason.
These firings follow the recent dismissal of at least 20 staff members who were part of former special counsel Jack Smith’s team, comprising not just attorneys but also support personnel and U.S. marshals.
Last week, Bondi also let go of Joseph Tirrell, the top career ethics official at the department, marking yet another in a series of ethics officials who have been ousted in the Trump era.
The wave of firings indicates that the administration’s campaign to “clean up” the DOJ is still very much in motion, having begun upon Trump’s ascent to power.
However, while the administration claims it is targeting those who have misused their political power, the overwhelming majority of DOJ employees remain unaffected by these changes.
Justice Connection, a left-leaning group of former DOJ employees committed to supporting “colleagues who are under attack,” estimates that only about 200 employees have been let go. Most of these individuals were involved in actions against January 6th protesters and efforts to pursue politically charged charges against Trump.
With a workforce of 115,000 across the nation, the DOJ includes attorneys, federal agents, correctional officers, and administrative staff who handle everything from national security investigations and criminal prosecutions to civil rights enforcement and immigration matters.
Many of these employees are career civil servants who have served under various administrations, and their roles are primarily non-political in nature.
The DOJ’s personnel is distributed across key agencies like the FBI, DEA, Bureau of Prisons, and U.S. Attorneys’ Offices, tackling a wide array of responsibilities.
As for the DOJ, it has opted not to comment on any personnel-related issues.
