Impact of Data Center Construction on Infrastructure Development

As reported by Bloomberg, the rapid acceleration of data center construction may have consequences on the progress of infrastructure projects such as roads and bridges. In 2025, state and local governments have seen a surge in debt sales for the second consecutive year, with experts forecasting an additional $600 billion in sales for the upcoming year, primarily allocated towards infrastructure initiatives.

The Census Bureau has revealed that private investments in data center construction have reached an annualized run rate exceeding $41 billion. This figure is comparable to the amount spent by state and local governments on transportation construction. Consequently, there is a potential competition for construction workers, especially amidst labor shortages resulting from retirements and stricter immigration policies implemented during President Donald Trump’s administration.

Andrew Anagnost, the CEO of Autodesk, a leading architecture and design software company, expressed concerns regarding the diversion of resources from infrastructure projects to data center construction. He emphasized that the prioritization of data center projects could impede the progress of essential infrastructure developments. Anagnost highlighted the likelihood of delays in infrastructure projects due to resource allocation issues caused by the burgeoning data center industry.
