Studying how to make batteries last longer

Studying how to make batteries last longer

A groundbreaking discovery in the charging process of lithium-ion batteries has the potential to increase their total lifespan by an impressive 50 per cent on average. This breakthrough, which requires a simple adjustment in the battery manufacturing process, can be readily implemented by battery manufacturers worldwide. The implications of this development are significant, particularly in enhancing the performance of electric vehicles and energy storage systems for electricity grids.

William Chueh, a researcher at Stanford University in California, highlights the significance of this innovation by stating, “The cool thing is that we didn’t change any chemistry of the battery. We just changed that last step in manufacturing to form the battery a little differently.” This minor modification in the manufacturing process can have a major impact on the longevity and efficiency of lithium-ion batteries.
