After spending a terrifying four months in a Dubai prison, US airman-turned-social media influencer Joseph Lopez and his brother Joshua have finally been freed. Their ordeal began when they traveled to the UAE in hopes of creating luxurious content for their social media platforms. However, a night out at a nightclub quickly turned into a nightmare when they were lured to a yacht party and allegedly drugged.

The brothers were initially approached by an Uber driver who offered to take them to an afterparty at a nearby hotel. Despite Joseph’s reluctance to pay the bill, they ended up being invited to a yacht party where they were given drinks by the staff. Joseph claimed that after being given a drink by a woman onboard, he blacked out and doesn’t remember anything until he was taken away by police officers.

The Lopez brothers were charged with assaulting an officer, resisting arrest, damaging a patrol vehicle, and alcohol consumption. They were held in the Al Barsha police station for several days before being sentenced to one month in jail for alcohol consumption. The travel ban prevented them from returning to the US until they were finally released.

Their release was made possible with the help of Detained in Dubai, an organization dedicated to assisting individuals facing legal issues in the UAE, and Ohio Senator and Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance. Vance was instrumental in ensuring the brothers’ safe return and was in constant communication with the State Department and the UAE Embassy.

The CEO of Detained in Dubai, Radha Stirling, emphasized the importance of this incident as a warning to tourists who believe the UAE is completely safe. She highlighted the fact that Joseph and Joshua were targeted, lured, and drugged while on vacation, and this type of crime often goes unreported. Stirling urged tourists to be cautious and aware of the risks when visiting Dubai.

Overall, the Lopez brothers’ ordeal serves as a cautionary tale about the potential dangers tourists may face in foreign countries, even in seemingly safe destinations like Dubai. Their experience underscores the importance of being vigilant and informed when traveling abroad.
