Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has chosen to remain silent regarding her relationship with fiancé Riley Roberts amidst speculation about a possible breakup. When approached by a New York Post reporter on Wednesday, August 12, regarding whether she and Roberts are still together, Ocasio-Cortez, 36, responded, “I don’t comment on my private life, but thank you.”
The reporter pressed further, inquiring if Ocasio-Cortez’s mother would see her wish fulfilled of her daughter marrying Roberts, 38. The congresswoman, however, chose not to engage, reiterating, “Again, I don’t comment on my private life, but thank you,” as she walked her dog.
When queried further about her relationship, Ocasio-Cortez continued to be reserved, saying, “No, I’m sorry, thank you.”
These comments came a day after TMZ published a report suggesting that Ocasio-Cortez and Roberts ended their relationship approximately two years ago, with Puck‘s chief Washington correspondent, Leigh Ann Caldwell, being the first to report on the alleged breakup.
According to Caldwell, she initially tweeted about the breakup on Tuesday, August 11, while discussing Ocasio-Cortez’s recent decision to freeze her eggs.
Caldwell suggested in her tweet that the breakup, which reportedly occurred two years ago, might be connected to Ocasio-Cortez’s decision to freeze her eggs. She later clarified her tweets, stating she had been informed by a reliable Democratic source about 18 months ago that the engagement had been called off.
In her follow-up comments, Caldwell claimed via X that Ocasio-Cortez had stopped wearing her engagement ring several months prior and that there had been no recent public sightings of her and Roberts together. She speculated, “Maybe they have gotten back together?” while noting that Ocasio-Cortez’s office had neither confirmed nor denied the status of the relationship.
Concluding her remarks, Caldwell expressed surprise, saying, “Honestly I thought that her calling off the engagement was much more widely known when I posted my original tweet.”
Us has sought comments from Ocasio-Cortez regarding the situation.
Ocasio-Cortez and Roberts met during their undergraduate years at Boston University and became engaged in 2022, as detailed in a GQ profile published that September. The congresswoman confirmed the engagement in May 2022, announcing to her followers on X that the engagement rumors were indeed “true!”
At that time, Ocasio-Cortez shared with Business Insider that the couple had gotten engaged in her family’s hometown in Puerto Rico the previous month. She mentioned, “No future details yet, we’re taking some space to savor this time before diving into planning.”
Though Ocasio-Cortez has generally kept her relationship with Roberts private, she recently opened up about her future parenting plans, documenting her journey to freeze her eggs.
She announced on her Instagram Stories on Saturday, August 8, “I want to share with you all a decision that is very personal that I have made that has taken me time to consider, weigh and save up for. And it is of a sensitive matter and a personal matter and usually I keep my private life quite private, but I have made the decision to start freezing my eggs.”
Ocasio-Cortez, often speculated as a potential future Democratic presidential nominee, acknowledged that her career goals influenced her decision. She stated, “This is a choice that I am making to feel more in control of my life and if people want to make assumptions about my decision, let them make those assumptions – I feel empowered to make this choice.” She added, “I think it’s a very privileged position that I’ve been able to be able to make. And it’s also a result of, I think, changes in technology that have also made it more financially accessible.”
