Amid the ongoing tariff war, US President Donald Trump expressed confidence in reaching a “very good deal” with China. This statement follows the US announcement of imposing tariffs of up to 245 per cent on Chinese imports in response to retaliatory actions by China.

Trump made these remarks during a meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in Washington, making her the first European leader to engage in face-to-face talks with him since the imposition and subsequent suspension of tariffs on European exports.

‘We’re going to make a very good deal with China,’ stated President Trump when questioned about concerns regarding allies aligning with China. He reassured, “Nobody can compete with us. I think we are going to make a very good deal with China.”

Trump also mentioned that China has shown willingness to engage in discussions with the US. He highlighted productive conversations with the President of Mexico and Japanese Trade Representatives, emphasizing the global interest in meeting with the US.

The White House conveyed Trump’s perspective that it is China’s responsibility, not the United States’, to initiate trade negotiations. The statement emphasized that China needs to make a deal with the US, with Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stating, “The ball is in China’s court.”

In response to Trump’s comments urging China to come to the negotiating table, China urged the US to refrain from threats and coercion. Foreign ministry spokesman Lin Jian emphasized the importance of dialogue based on equality and mutual respect to resolve trade disputes.
