A scandal has rocked the nonprofit world as a former executive is accused of embezzling $132,000 in public funds to finance a lavish lifestyle that included plastic surgeries, luxury vacations, and even a trip to Disneyland. Amy Knox, who served as the COO of the Harm Reduction Coalition of San Diego, allegedly used the stolen money for personal expenses such as breast implants, a tummy tuck, arm and thigh lifts, as well as purchasing purebred dogs, martial arts classes, and a trip to Hawaii.

The 45-year-old also went by the names Amy Hernandez and Amy Ketchum and resided in a luxurious $1.3 million home in Alpine, San Diego, in addition to owning a second property. The funds she misappropriated were intended for providing free anti-overdose medication and fentanyl tests for drug users in the city, which were raised through tax contributions and philanthropic grants.

The CEO of the Harm Reduction Coalition, Tara Stamos-Buesig, first became aware of Knox’s fraudulent activities in May and promptly alerted the authorities. The District Attorney’s office launched an investigation, leading to the cancellation of the county’s contracts with the organization. Stamos-Buesig expressed her devastation over the loss of funding and the impact it has had on the nonprofit, stating that it has been “gutted” as a result.

Knox was arrested on six felony counts of fraud and misappropriation and faces up to seven years in prison. San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan condemned Knox’s actions, calling her behavior “sickening” and highlighting the failure of checks and balances meant to safeguard public funds. It was revealed that Knox had a prior conviction for embezzling $500,000 from a previous employer, raising questions about her continued control over the finances of the Harm Reduction Coalition.

As the case unfolds, the nonprofit community is left reeling from the betrayal of trust and the potential consequences for those in need of critical services. The impact of Knox’s actions serves as a stark reminder of the importance of accountability and oversight in the management of public funds.
