Anil Kumble, the former India captain, recently expressed his opinion on the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) decision to release Andre Russell ahead of the IPL 2026 auction. Kumble believes that KKR should have retained the Jamaican all-rounder, as it would have allowed them to enter the auction with the maximum remaining purse among all franchises.

Russell was one of the nine players released by KKR before the auction, along with the trade of Mayank Markande to the Mumbai Indians for ₹30 lakh. Kumble, speaking on Star Sports, mentioned that although Russell’s form may have dipped in the last couple of seasons, he still has the potential to win matches single-handedly.

“I think it was a mixed decision to release Andre Russell. He may not have performed at his best in recent seasons, but retaining him at ₹12 crore would have been a strategic move, considering his match-winning abilities. With players like Glenn Maxwell and Liam Livingstone also available in the auction, KKR could have benefitted from retaining Russell and still having the maximum purse,” Kumble commented.

In the previous edition of the IPL, Russell scored 167 runs and picked up eight wickets in 10 matches. Despite his average performance in IPL 2025, Kumble believes that Russell’s impact on the game cannot be overlooked.

On the other hand, former India wicketkeeper-batter Saba Karim suggested that there is a strong possibility KKR may buy back Russell at the auction. He mentioned that KKR head coach Abhishek Nayar prefers starting fresh and retaining only players who can contribute consistently to the team.

However, Kumble disagreed with Karim’s assessment, stating that KKR values players based on their on-field performance rather than their monetary worth. He expressed surprise at the idea of KKR repurchasing Russell but mentioned that they might consider bringing back Venkatesh Iyer instead.

As the IPL 2026 auction approaches, the decision to release Andre Russell remains a topic of debate among cricket pundits. It will be interesting to see if KKR decides to bid for the dynamic all-rounder once again.
