During her tenure as editor of American Vogue, Anna Wintour featured Michelle Obama on the magazine’s cover three times while she was first lady. In contrast, Melania Trump has not been given the same opportunity.
In 2019, Melania’s spokesman at the time addressed this by saying, “Being on the cover of Vogue is not significant for Mrs. Trump; she achieved that well before becoming first lady.”
Stephanie Grisham, speaking then, emphasized, “Her responsibilities as first lady of the United States and her contributions are far more substantial than a superficial photo shoot or cover appearance. This situation underscores the fashion magazine industry’s bias and highlights Anna Wintour’s insecurity and narrow-mindedness.”
Grisham added, “Mrs. Trump is, unfortunately, accustomed to such divisive actions.”
These comments followed questions directed at Wintour regarding her decision to feature other first ladies, such as Obama and Hillary Clinton, both Democrats, on Vogue‘s cover.
Wintour, originally from England, explained, “We choose to profile women in the magazine based on their stances on issues, as we support them and regard them as leaders.”
