“It was important to her that we show the racial dynamics of the town in the series,” Oldroyd explains. “We didn’t want to make it the central focus, but it was important to acknowledge it. So, Anna being a woman of color in a predominantly white town was a conscious decision that we made. It added an extra layer of complexity to her character and to the story as a whole.”

What do you hope viewers take away from “His & Hers”?

“I hope viewers are entertained, first and foremost,” Oldroyd says. “But I also hope they’re surprised and shocked by the twists and turns the story takes. And maybe, after watching, they’ll think about the lengths a mother would go to protect her child, and the impact of unresolved trauma on a person’s life. I hope it sparks some interesting conversations.”

With its gripping storyline, unexpected twists, and stellar performances from Thompson and Bernthal, “His & Hers” is a must-watch for fans of mystery and thriller genres. The limited series keeps viewers on the edge of their seats as the shocking truth behind the murders is revealed, making it a binge-worthy addition to Netflix’s lineup.

By focusing on Anna and Lexy in the cabin, we wanted to highlight their complex relationship and the tension between them. This showdown was the culmination of their rivalry and the key to unlocking the truth behind the murders. Including Alice in that moment would have diluted the impact of their confrontation and diverted attention from the main storyline. It was important for us to keep the focus on Anna and Lexy in order to deliver a satisfying resolution to their conflict.

Overall, the series delves deep into the complexities of female relationships and the impact of past traumas on present actions. The dynamic between Anna, Catherine, and Lexy is a central theme that drives the narrative forward. By exploring the connections between these characters and the secrets they hold, the series presents a compelling exploration of power, betrayal, and redemption.

In a surprising turn of events, we discover that the mysterious voice-over we’ve been hearing throughout the series actually belongs to Alice, not Anna. The revelation comes in the form of a letter, where Alice confesses that everything she has done was out of love for her daughter. The motive behind her actions was not deceit or blackmail, but a mother’s unwavering love for her child.

When asked if there was ever a consideration to make another character the killer, the answer was a resounding no. It was always Alice in the book, and the motive behind her character was deemed strong and compelling. The decision to keep Alice as the killer was a deliberate one, as it added depth to the story and avoided the cliches often seen in murder mysteries.

In the series, Anna learns the truth about her mother’s crime through the letter, a departure from the book. This change was important to make the reveal clear to Anna, especially as she is about to become a mother herself. The use of voice-overs throughout the series added an element of suspense, leading viewers to believe that Anna was the killer, only to have the truth revealed in the final episode.

Translating certain scenes and character arcs from the book to the screen was a challenge, particularly when it came to handling sensitive topics like sexual assault. The team behind the series wanted to ensure that these moments carried enough weight to justify the character’s actions, while also approaching them with sensitivity and empathy.

When asked about potential spin-offs, the focus was on characters like Richard, who could be further explored in a storyline where he is in jail. However, the core of the series revolves around Jack, Anna, and Meg, with a new baby on the way.

Overall, the interview shed light on the creative process behind the series and the thought that went into crafting a compelling and emotionally resonant story. The unique twist of having Alice as the killer added depth to the narrative and kept viewers on the edge of their seats until the very end.
