Twice-Convicted Robber Arrested Again for Violent Attack in Chicago Pedway

A twice-convicted robber, Tremaine Giles, is facing new robbery charges after being identified in CTA surveillance footage released by Chicago police earlier this year. The violent attack left two Lakeview women with concussions.

Giles, 26, along with two other suspects who remain at large, allegedly assaulted the two women inside the Jackson pedway on January 24, according to prosecutors.

The victims, aged 22 and 25, were walking through the pedway between the Blue and Red Lines when Giles blocked their path. He then proceeded to physically assault the women in an attempt to steal their belongings.

Giles targeted the younger woman first, pushing her against the wall and trying to snatch her bag while verbally abusing her. The other two men prevented the second victim from intervening, prosecutors stated.

When the second woman tried to stop the robbery, Giles reportedly slapped her, pulled her hair, and threw her into the wall of the pedway. Despite managing to steal one woman’s purse, Giles was unsuccessful in taking the first victim’s backpack.

Following an anonymous tip identifying Giles and a victim positively identifying him from a photo lineup, Judge James Costello ordered Giles to be detained, noting the excessive violence used during the robbery.

Giles was apprehended by Chicago police after they observed him jumping a turnstile at the Roosevelt CTA station and realizing he was wanted for the robbery incident, as per his arrest report.

Both victims sustained concussions and required medical treatment, with one experiencing hearing loss as a result of the attack, the detention order revealed.

Having previously served a six-year prison sentence for robbing an elderly victim in Bridgeview, Giles also has a history of juvenile robbery charges, according to prosecutors.

He now faces charges of robbery, attempted robbery, and two counts of aggravated battery in connection with the recent incident.
