Anthropic made headlines on Wednesday with the announcement of its acquisition of Vercept, an AI startup deeply embedded in Seattle’s tech community. This move comes on the heels of Anthropic’s recent acquisition of Bun, a coding agent engine, to enhance its Claude Code platform.

Vercept distinguished itself with innovative tools designed for complex agentic tasks, such as Vy, a cloud-based computer-use agent capable of operating a remote Apple MacBook. The startup was part of Seattle’s AI-focused A12 incubator, which originated from the renowned Allen Institute for AI. The co-founders of Vercept, including Matt Deitke, who secured a landmark $250 million salary from Meta last year, have ties to the Allen Institute, where they previously conducted research.

In a LinkedIn post, Vercept CEO Kiana Ehsani revealed that the startup had raised $50 million, with Seth Bannon from A12 serving as the lead investor. Notable angel investors included Eric Schmidt, Jeff Dean, Kyle Vogt, and Arash Ferdowsi. Following the acquisition, some of Vercept’s co-founders, including Ehsani, Luca Weihs, and Ross Girshick, joined Anthropic, while others, like Oren Etzioni, opted out.

Etzioni, a prominent figure in Seattle’s tech community and a co-founder of Vercept, expressed disappointment with the acquisition, citing concerns about the company’s direction. A public exchange between Etzioni and Bannon ensued, highlighting the high stakes involved in building successful AI ventures. Despite the discord, Anthropic’s interest in acquiring Vercept’s talented team is evident.

While the financial terms of the deal remain undisclosed, Etzioni confirmed that he received a positive return on his investment. Ehsani expressed enthusiasm about joining forces with Anthropic, emphasizing the opportunity to accelerate their shared vision. The decision to merge with Anthropic was driven by the desire to work collaboratively towards a common goal, rather than pursuing separate paths.

In conclusion, Anthropic’s acquisition of Vercept underscores the competitive landscape of the AI industry and the drive to cultivate groundbreaking technologies. The integration of Vercept’s expertise into Anthropic’s ecosystem signals a strategic move towards innovation and growth in the evolving tech sector.
