Anthropic CEO Refuses Pentagon’s Request for Unrestricted Access to AI Systems

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei made a bold statement on Thursday, expressing his firm stance against granting the military unrestricted access to its AI systems. In a public address, Amodei emphasized that he could not, in good conscience, comply with the Pentagon’s request.

Amodei clarified that while the Department of War is responsible for military decisions, there are certain scenarios where the use of AI could potentially compromise democratic values. He highlighted two specific cases where Anthropic believes AI should not be utilized: mass surveillance of Americans and the deployment of fully autonomous weapons without human oversight.

The Pentagon, on the other hand, insists on leveraging Anthropic’s AI model for all lawful purposes and asserts that private companies should not dictate the scope of its military applications.

The escalating tension between Anthropic and the Department of Defense reached a critical juncture as Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth imposed a deadline for Anthropic to comply with the military’s demands. Hegseth threatened to designate Anthropic as a supply chain risk or invoke the Defense Production Act to compel the company to align with the Pentagon’s requirements.

Amodei called out the inconsistency in these ultimatums, pointing out the conflicting labels of security risk and national security asset assigned to Anthropic by the Department.

While acknowledging the Department’s prerogative to choose contractors aligned with its objectives, Amodei underscored the significant value that Anthropic’s technology offers to the armed forces. He expressed hope that the Department would reconsider its stance and continue to collaborate with Anthropic.

As the sole frontier AI lab with classified-ready systems for the military, Anthropic plays a pivotal role in advancing technological capabilities for national defense. However, the DOD is reportedly exploring alternative options, such as xAI, to fulfill its requirements.

Amodei reiterated Anthropic’s commitment to serving the Department and the military, provided that the two specified safeguards are in place. However, he made it clear that if the Department chooses to terminate their partnership, Anthropic will facilitate a seamless transition to a new provider to prevent any disruptions in military operations.

In summary, Amodei’s message to the Pentagon can be encapsulated as: “We can part ways amicably without hostility.”
