Ariel Winter Reflects on the Challenges of Fame Post-“Modern Family”
Ariel Winter, best known for her role as Alex Dunphy on the hit ABC sitcom “Modern Family,” recently opened up about the difficulties she faced while in the spotlight during her time on the show. In a candid conversation with People, Winter discussed how the media’s harsh criticism of her physical appearance took a toll on her self-esteem, especially during her teenage years.
During her 11 seasons on “Modern Family,” Winter was subjected to relentless scrutiny from the media, with headlines often focusing on her looks and body. She recalled reading articles that referred to her as “terrible,” “pregnant,” or even a “fat slut” when she was just 14 years old. The constant negative attention left Winter feeling insecure and damaged her self-esteem.
“No matter what I was going through, I was a target,” Winter shared. “It made it very difficult to look at myself in the mirror and go, ‘I love this version of me.'”
After the show concluded in 2020, Winter made the decision to leave Los Angeles with her boyfriend. However, she made it clear that she did not leave the entertainment industry altogether. In addition to acting, Winter is actively involved with SOSA (Safe From Online Sex Abuse), an advocacy group that works to protect young people from online predators.
While Winter acknowledges that she has faced challenges and hardships, she prefers not to label herself as a “survivor.” Instead, she sees herself as someone who is dedicated to helping others and bringing attention to important causes.
“Technically, yes, I’m a survivor. I’ve gone through some shit,” Winter said. “But a lot of people have gone through some shit. Calling me a survivor takes away from what I’m here for, which is to help others and shine a spotlight on those that need it.”
Winter’s story serves as a reminder of the darker side of fame and the importance of prioritizing mental health and self-care in the face of relentless scrutiny. Despite the challenges she has faced, Winter remains resilient and committed to making a positive impact in the world.
