Elon Musk has recently announced a controversial event in Wisconsin where he plans to distribute $2 million to two voters participating in the upcoming Wisconsin Supreme Court special election. This endeavor raises red flags, echoing the dubious lottery scheme Musk orchestrated during the 2024 election cycle.
Musk’s initiative appears to blatantly breach Wisconsin’s election bribery statutes:
Nonpartisan election analysts have weighed in, asserting that Musk’s lottery scheme is indeed illegal, a sentiment echoed by the Wisconsin Democratic Party.
Wisconsin Democratic Party Chair Ben Wikler expressed strong disapproval in a statement:
Musk has engaged in a flagrant violation of election laws by attempting to purchase votes to aid Brad Schimel. This scheme represents a direct assault on democracy and the rule of law, both in Wisconsin and across the nation.
It is imperative that Elon Musk faces consequences for his apparent attempt to buy votes for Schimel, and that Schimel himself denounces Musk’s actions. Should Schimel not condemn this behavior, it raises questions about his own complicity in Musk’s machinations.
Law enforcement must intervene immediately to prevent further escalation. Musk’s actions to support Schimel have already crossed legal boundaries and if he enters Wisconsin, he should be held accountable like any other individual breaking the law. He can defend himself in a courtroom, but he cannot manipulate the judiciary.
Chair Wikler’s assertions are compelling. The solution to curtail Musk’s apparent vote-buying scheme lies in his arrest and prosecution, which would send a powerful message to other affluent individuals contemplating similar tactics to influence elections.
As long as Musk continues unchallenged, he will persist in this behavior, underscoring the urgent need to hold this billionaire accountable for his alleged transgressions against democratic principles.
