Leading the Charge for Science and Democracy

As a former PhD student in environmental engineering, my passion for using technical expertise to make a positive impact on the world led me to a career in policy work at the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS). My journey included stints at the White House and the US Department of Transportation, where I focused on the critical role of science in government decision-making and the decarbonization of the transportation system. Now, as the new President and CEO of UCS, I am excited to continue the organization’s legacy of advocating for science and democracy.

UCS has a rich history of over 50 years, during which it has navigated through challenging times, advocating for science-based policies, raising awareness about threats to the environment and society, and securing important victories for the greater good.

Founded during turbulent times when the misuse of science was becoming evident, UCS has always been at the forefront of defending science and holding those in power accountable. Today, as we face new challenges, it is more important than ever for us to leverage our values, expertise, and skills to address the pressing issues of our time.

The current political climate poses significant threats to science and scientists. The actions of the Trump administration have shown a blatant disregard for scientific evidence and have undermined the work of federal experts dedicated to public health, safety, and equity. The erosion of checks and balances on presidential power further jeopardizes the use of science for the greater good.

Despite these challenges, UCS is prepared to fight back. Our Save Science, Save Lives campaign is in full swing, mobilizing networks and resources to push back against threats to science and evidence-based decision-making. We are committed to holding the line, preserving hard-fought victories in areas such as clean energy, climate action, and environmental justice.

As we navigate this uncertain terrain, we must stay true to our values and vision. We cannot allow important aspects of federal work, such as environmental justice and climate initiatives, to be erased or undermined. We must innovate and strategize, leveraging our expertise and resources to adapt to new challenges and focus on areas where we can make the most impact.

UCS has a history of standing up to powerful forces and advocating for a world that serves everyone. As we face the current threats to science and democracy, we must honor the legacy of those who came before us and continue the fight for a safer, healthier, and more equitable world driven by facts and evidence.

Our mandate is clear, our moral imperative strong. I am ready to lead UCS in this crucial moment, and I invite everyone to join us in this important journey towards a better future for all.
