As the conflict in Ukraine stretches into its third year, a notable shift in the U.S. stance on facilitating peace talks has emerged. Recent developments suggest that while the Trump administration had been actively involved in mediating discussions, the onus for progress is now shifting back to Russia and Ukraine.
In recent weeks, both Trump and key members of his cabinet have expressed frustration over the stagnation of negotiations, hinting that the U.S. might withdraw from its mediator role. It appears that moment has finally arrived.
Marco Rubio, in an interview with Fox News, voiced his concerns that progress between the two nations was “not fast enough.”
Adding to this sentiment, Vice President JD Vance echoed Rubio’s remarks, stating bluntly that the Ukraine war “is not going to end any time soon,” a stark acknowledgment of the ongoing challenges in reaching a peace agreement.
Sky News reported:
“Russia and Ukraine are getting closer to a peace deal but not fast enough, the U.S.’s top diplomat has said.”
Rubio reiterated Washington’s readiness to step aside if a deal fails to materialize—a warning he has delivered multiple times in the past week.
“I think we know where Ukraine is, and we know where Russia is right now… they’re closer, but they’re still far apart,” he remarked during his Fox News appearance.
In a parallel commentary, Vice President Vance highlighted that it was hard to envision a swift conclusion to the conflict.

“Vance on the Russia-Ukraine War: ‘It’s not going to end any time soon. And I think the Ukrainians – yeah, they’re angry they were invaded, but are we going to continue to lose thousands and thousands of soldiers over a few miles of territory?’”

Following these remarks, the State Department provided a more definitive update, indicating a shift in the U.S. role in the negotiations.
Meduza reported:
“The United States will no longer ‘fly around the world’ to act as a mediator between Russia and Ukraine, marking a shift in Washington’s approach to peace negotiations,” noted State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce.
Bruce emphasized that Secretary of State Marco Rubio has made it “very clear” that the U.S. is altering its involvement in the talks—no longer willing to be the go-to intermediary. “We certainly are still committed to it and will help and do what we can,” she added, “but we are not going to fly around the world at the drop of a hat to mediate meetings.”
She stressed the necessity for both parties to “present and develop concrete ideas about how this conflict is going to end,” and reiterated that the U.S. would not be lifting any sanctions against Russia currently in place.
“We will not be the mediators.
…
We are not going to fly around the world at the drop of a hat to mediate meetings. That it is now between the two parties”Sounds like the US is out from the negotiations process?!! pic.twitter.com/nOq5KzIdhn
