Netflix Announces Director for Live-Action “Assassin’s Creed” Series

Netflix’s highly anticipated live-action “Assassin’s Creed” series has taken a major step forward with the announcement of its director. Johan Renck, the acclaimed Swedish filmmaker known for his work on HBO’s award-winning mini-series “Chernobyl,” is set to helm the upcoming show, as reported by Variety.

Produced in collaboration with Ubisoft, “Assassin’s Creed” is based on the popular video game franchise that delves into the secret war between two shadowy factions. One group seeks to control and manipulate humanity’s future, while the other fights to preserve free will. The series will follow characters through pivotal historical events as they battle to shape the destiny of humanity.

Show creators and executive producers Roberto Patino and David Wiener are leading the development of the series, with support from Ubisoft Film & Television executives Gerard Guillemot, Margaret Boykin, Austin Dill, and Genevieve Jones, as well as Matt O’Toole.

The “Assassin’s Creed” franchise, which began in 2007, has seen immense success with 14 installments released to date and over 230 million copies sold worldwide. A film adaptation starring Michael Fassbender was also released in 2016.

In addition to his work on “Chernobyl,” Renck has an impressive resume that includes directing episodes of popular TV series like “Breaking Bad,” “The Walking Dead,” and “Vikings.” His collaboration with Netflix extends to projects such as “Bloodline” and the sci-fi feature “Spaceman,” starring Adam Sandler.

Prior to taking on the “Assassin’s Creed” series, Renck had considered stepping away from filmmaking to pursue other interests. However, his passion for storytelling and creative projects drew him back in, leading to his involvement in this exciting new venture.
