AST SpaceMobile Inc. (NASDAQ:ASTS) has announced a new agreement to acquire global S-Band spectrum priority rights, expanding its satellite spectrum portfolio. The deal, governed by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), will allow AST to access Mobile Satellite Services (MSS) spectrum rights in the 1980–2010 MHz and 2170–2200 MHz frequency bands for use in low-earth orbit.

This move aligns with AST’s mission to build the first space-based cellular broadband network that can connect directly with standard mobile phones. The company’s Chairman and CEO, Abel Avellan, emphasized that this integration will enable AST to deliver mobile broadband services directly from space, offering peak speeds of up to 120 Mbps.

The agreement, valued at $64.5 million, includes $26 million due at closing and $38.5 million in deferred payments tied to performance milestones. The deal is expected to close in the second half of 2025, subject to customary conditions, with payment to be made in either stock or cash at AST’s discretion.

AST’s spectrum acquisition could enhance connectivity in underserved regions through partnerships with mobile network operators. The company’s strategic focus on expanding its spectrum portfolio underscores its commitment to revolutionizing global communication through satellite technology.

In addition to this development, AST recently issued new convertible senior notes to raise capital and repurchased existing debt by issuing new shares of its Class A common stock. These financial moves demonstrate AST’s proactive approach to strengthening its financial position and pursuing growth opportunities in the satellite communication sector.

Investors tracking AST SpaceMobile Inc. may want to keep an eye on related ETFs such as the SPDR S&P Aerospace & Defense ETF (NYSE:XAR) and the ARK Space Exploration & Innovation ETF (BATS:ARKX) for broader industry trends.

As of the latest update, ASTS shares were trading lower by 0.57% at $52.27. This price action reflects the dynamic nature of the market and the potential impact of recent developments on the company’s valuation.

Overall, AST SpaceMobile’s acquisition of global S-Band spectrum priority rights marks a significant milestone in its mission to deliver mobile broadband services directly from space. The company’s strategic focus on expanding its satellite spectrum portfolio underscores its commitment to revolutionizing global communication through innovative technology.
