LOS ANGELES (AP) — A powerful storm system known as an atmospheric river was bringing heavy rain to Southern California on Saturday, leading to flood warnings in coastal areas of Los Angeles County that were recently affected by wildfires.

The National Weather Service reported intense rainfall rates of up to an inch (2.5 centimeters) per hour in coastal regions prone to flash flooding. The storm, which originated as a long plume of tropical moisture over the Pacific Ocean, had already brought over four inches of rain to coastal Santa Barbara County before moving towards Los Angeles.

The stormy weather also resulted in tragic incidents, with a 71-year-old man dying after his vehicle was swept away in Northern California and a 5-year-old being swept into the ocean by large waves on the central coast. A wooden boat carrying migrants capsized off the Southern California coast, leaving four people dead and four hospitalized.

Flood advisories extended from Ventura County through Malibu into Los Angeles, prompting Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass to issue an Evacuation Warning for areas near recent burn scars. Mandatory evacuation orders were also issued for high-risk properties in Palisades and Eaton fire burn areas.

Despite the challenges posed by the storm, Los Angeles residents were urged to stay safe and take necessary precautions to prevent further damage. The GOES-West satellite imagery captures a low-pressure system and an atmospheric river impacting Southern California. There is a high risk of heavy rainfall leading to flash floods and debris flows in the region. Stay alert and prepared for potential hazards. 🌧️ #WeatherUpdate #California #AtmosphericRiver following sentence:
