Filmmaker and editorial cartoonist Aurel is gearing up for his next project following the success of his César-winning film “Josep.” His upcoming animated feature, titled “Desert,” will take audiences on a thrilling Western adventure set in France’s picturesque Cevennes mountain range.
Set in the late 19th century, “Desert” follows a Mexico-born gunslinger who embarks on a mysterious mission to explore his family’s ancestral land in south-central France. Upon his arrival, he becomes entangled in a conflict with an oppressive landowner and his brutal henchmen, as he seeks to protect a local clan from their tyranny.
Aurel describes “Desert” as a unique blend of traditional Western elements and the adventurous spirit of an “Indiana Jones” style quest. The filmmaker aims to merge two seemingly disparate worlds to create a compelling and captivating narrative that will transport viewers to a time and place filled with danger, intrigue, and unexpected alliances.
The creative team behind the critically acclaimed “Josep” is reuniting for “Desert,” including screenwriter Jean-Louis Milesi and producer Serge Lalou of Les Films d’Ici Méditerranée. Animation studios Les Fées Spéciales and Tchack will also be on board to bring Aurel’s vision to life on the screen.
In addition to his work on “Desert,” Aurel recently presented a new project at the Cartoon Forum in Toulouse. Titled “Animals in a Nutshell,” the short-form series is adapted from science journalist Nathaniel Herzberg’s zoology columns in the newspaper Le Monde. Aurel, who previously worked as an editorial cartoonist for the publication, brings his unique storytelling style to this educational series, which explores the natural world with humor and irreverence.
Narrated by the talented singer and actor Camélia Jordana, each four-minute episode of “Animals in a Nutshell” offers a playful and engaging look at various animal species. The series combines illustration, education, and humor to deliver a fun and informative viewing experience for audiences of all ages.
Aurel and his team are excited to continue their collaboration on these two distinct projects, showcasing their versatility and creativity in the world of animation and storytelling. With “Desert” promising an epic Western adventure and “Animals in a Nutshell” offering a lighthearted exploration of the animal kingdom, audiences can look forward to a diverse and engaging lineup of content from this talented filmmaker and his team.
