When Nichole Croasdale tied the knot with her husband, David, at the close of last year, the wedding budget had to undergo several revisions.

“Initially, we had set a budget of $15,000 but that quickly escalated to $40,000, and eventually we ended up spending closer to $60,000,” said Croasdale.

This total included their return flights from Brisbane, accommodation for 10 nights, photography, videography, marquee, catering, drinks, family activities, and various other expenses.

Susannah Reid, director of The Wedding Planner, noted a trend of increasing wedding costs in recent years. In 2023, the average wedding budget in New Zealand was $58,800, which rose to $63,600 the following year, and reached $87,600 this year.

Reid attributed this rise to couples opting for more personalized, high-quality experiences and incorporating weekend-long celebrations or destination-style elements into their weddings.

She also highlighted the shift towards longer planning periods of 18 to 24 months, allowing couples to budget more realistically and secure their preferred venues and vendors without going into debt.

While some families may assist with wedding expenses, financial coach Liz Koh emphasized the importance of understanding the long-term financial implications of wedding spending.

Croasdale defended her higher-than-anticipated wedding expenses, stating that the memories created were priceless for their family.

Ultimately, the decision to spend on a wedding is a personal one, balancing priorities and values against future financial goals.

As the wedding industry continues to evolve, couples are investing more in creating unique and memorable experiences that reflect their individuality and preferences.

It’s not just about throwing a party but crafting a once-in-a-lifetime celebration that resonates with who they are as a couple.

Whether opting for a lavish affair or a more budget-conscious celebration, the key is to make informed choices that align with both short-term desires and long-term financial objectives.

At the end of the day, a wedding is a significant milestone that should be enjoyed and cherished, regardless of the price tag attached to it.
